Surabaya (ANTARA) - Surabaya State University (Unesa) has set a record with the Indonesian World Records Museum (MURI) through a mass yoga activity involving the largest number of disabled participants within an educational institution, marking International Yoga Day 2026 in Surabaya on Sunday. A total of 3,000 participants joined the yoga session themed ‘Guiding Synchronized Gathering of Thousands Through A Unified Body-Mind Journey’, organised by Unesa in collaboration with the Indian Embassy through the Honorary Consul of India in Surabaya. The event featured actor and yoga instructor Anjasmara Prasetya and involved more than 150 disabled participants. ‘There is no distance between disability and non-disability. We proved this together with Mas Anjasmara, who remarkably provided movements that could be performed by disabled children,’ said Unesa Vice-Rector IV Dwi Cahyo Kartiko during the activity at the Lidah Wetan Campus II, Surabaya. Dwi Cahyo stated that the event aligns with Unesa’s three main pillars of excellence: sports, arts, and disability. According to him, the university is committed to providing a fair and inclusive space to improve the health quality of the entire academic community, regardless of condition or background. He added that yoga offers various benefits, including boosting metabolism, improving blood circulation, increasing oxygen levels, and helping the body become more relaxed. MURI representative Almy Birama appreciated Unesa’s initiative in providing a shared sports space that considers the needs of people with disabilities. ‘In an educational institution setting, this yoga event with the largest number of disabled participants is the first, and we appreciate the spirit and good intentions in embracing everyone,’ he said. Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Shri Sandeep Chakravorty also expressed his appreciation to Unesa for organising the event. ‘So, I believe the message coming from Surabaya today is that yoga is also for people with disabilities. I am sure this is a very important message for the world,’ he stated.
