Unemployment in West Java Reaches 1.79 Million, BPS: There is a Decline

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of West Java has revealed that the unemployment figure in West Java reached 1.79 million people, or 6.64 per cent of the total workforce, in February 2026. This number is claimed to have declined by 0.10 per cent compared to February 2025.

“The unemployment rate in West Java has experienced a decline. The Open Unemployment Rate (TPT) in February 2026 was recorded at 6.64 per cent, or 1.79 million people, down 0.10 percentage points from February 2025,” stated the Head of BPS West Java, Margaretha Ari Anggorowati, in an official statement on Wednesday (6/5/2026).

She said that the working-age population in West Java in February 2026 reached 39.47 million people. From this number, the workforce totalled 26.89 million people, while those not in the workforce numbered 12.58 million people.

“From the 26.89 million workforce, there were 25.10 million people employed, and 1.79 million unemployed,” she said.

She noted that there was an addition of 110,190 workers absorbed over the past year. Meanwhile, the number of unemployed decreased by 20,790 people.

Margaretha added that West Java’s economy showed growth of 5.79 per cent on an annual year-on-year basis. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2025, West Java’s economy grew positively by 0.24 per cent.

“The performance of the economy in the first quarter of 2026 was driven by several key factors, including an increase in public mobility reaching 56.54 million domestic tourist trips due to the Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr moments,” she said.

In terms of structure by business field, the manufacturing industry dominated at 39.60 per cent, trade at 14.21 per cent, agriculture at 9.22 per cent, construction at 8.14 per cent, and transportation at 6.84 per cent. The highest contributions to growth by business field came from the industrial sector at 1.65 per cent, transportation at 0.81 per cent, information and communication at 0.58 per cent, accommodation and food and drink at 0.51 per cent, and trade at 0.45 per cent.
