UNDP: Continued RAN-KSB policy needs institutional strengthening

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has assessed that the continued policy of the National Action Plan for Sustainable Palm Oil Plantations (RAN-KSB) needs to strengthen institutions so that sustainable practices can endure beyond project cycles.

National Project Manager for the Green Commodities Programme (GCP) and Sustainable Landscape Programme Indonesia (SLPI) at UNDP, Dian Yuanita Wulandari, said the continued RAN-KSB policy is expected to have a legal umbrella in the form of a Presidential Regulation (Perpres).

“We are now moving towards the next national action plan, which is expected to take the form of a Presidential Regulation. The process is still ongoing. This shows how important a comprehensive policy framework is to implement because we are thinking beyond certification,” Dian said at the Regional Learning Forum on Sustainable Commodities in Jakarta on Friday.

RAN-KSB was previously established through Presidential Instruction Number 6 of 2019 for the 2019–2024 period as a roadmap for improving the governance of sustainable palm oil plantations at the national and regional levels.

UNDP’s presentation at the forum stated that innovation at the site level is not the main obstacle in expanding sustainable commodity practices.

Dian said that successful practices need to be translated into policies, governance mechanisms, and institutional processes in order to produce change on a broader scale.

Through the GCP, UNDP supports the strengthening of sustainable palm oil governance, policy coherence and coordination, institutional capacity building, and inclusive stakeholder engagement in the implementation of action plans at the national and regional levels.
