Undip Student Attacked by Mob, DPR Commission X Highlights Violence-Prevention Rules
The Deputy Chairman of DPR Commission X, Lalu Hadrian, has drawn attention to the assault case in which 30 students from Diponegoro University (Undip) attacked another student, Arnendo (20). He urged the government to review violence-prevention rules in educational settings. He argued that the regulations governing violence prevention in educational environments need revisiting if they have not effectively curbed violence on campuses or in schools. “This is a joint responsibility, not only the campus, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) must re‑review. There is already a Permendikbudristek related to prevention of violence — physical, verbal, and sexual. If that regulation cannot reduce the number of violence incidents, then let us review it together,” Hadrian said in the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Friday (6 March 2026). He said evaluation is needed so that the existing rules truly prevent various forms of violence in educational settings. Indeed, the rules could be strengthened by placing them in a law if ministerial regulations are deemed weak. “Whether Permendikbudristek is still very weak or whether we should codify it into law—this is an important topic for our future discussions, because it’s a case of one rule giving way to many others,” he said. He added that a clause strengthening violence-prevention rules in educational environments has also been included in the revision of the National Education System Law (Sisdiknas). “Yes, that clause is in one article of the Sisdiknas law to give stronger protection to existing ministerial regulations,” Hadrian clarified. His side will also invite the government to discuss the issue. The invitation is planned after Eid al-Fitr. “After Eid we will invite and discuss. We will evaluate the ministerial regulations related to this violence. If they are indeed very weak, we will seek the latest rules that are truly binding and strong,” he concluded. Victim had Previously Reported Alleged Harassment: The assault victim Arnendo had previously reported alleged harassment to the campus authorities. He was reported by three female students to the Dean’s Office before the assault. According to DetikJateng, Nurul Hasfi, Director of the Directorate of Media Networks, Community, and Public Communication at Undip, said Arnendo had been reported by three female students to the Deanship. “Yes, we received reports from the Deans’ Office that the person in question engaged in sexual harassment against three female students,” Nurul said.
