A student at Diponegoro University (Undip) in Semarang is suspected of sending lewd messages to approximately 10 female students via Instagram direct message (DM). The university has now stepped in to investigate the case.

One of the victims recounted that she initially became acquainted with the alleged perpetrator through social media. However, the conversation on the platform gradually began to veer in an indecent direction.

“Initially he followed me, then he liked to react to my stories. Over time, the chat was normal, like getting to know each other, asking what major and so on. After that, he started chatting in an inappropriate direction,” the victim said.

The victim mentioned that the alleged perpetrator is a student of the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) at Undip. Nevertheless, the victims are known to come from various different faculties and departments.

“As far as I know, there are around 10 victims. But it turns out when I read the comments on Instagram, there are more victims than that,” she said.

When asked for confirmation separately, the Director of Data Integration and Media Networks at Undip, Nurul Hasfi, confirmed the report regarding the case. He stated that the university is currently conducting a verification process.

“It is true, the person concerned is an Undip student. Currently, the information received is still in the process of verification through the applicable mechanism,” Nurul said via short message.

Based on initial information, Nurul explained that the alleged harassment occurred outside formal lecture activities. He stressed that the university will follow up on the reports received.

“The alleged harassment was in the form of verbal communication via online media in the context of the individual’s personal social interactions,” he explained.

“Undip continues to follow up on the report objectively by prioritising the principle of prudence and the protection of the parties involved,” Nurul concluded.
