Understanding Toll Road Escape Ramps Could Save Lives During Brake Failure

Brake failure remains a major concern for drivers, particularly when descending hills or traversing mountainous toll road sections. In such emergencies, panic often prevents drivers from making the right decisions. However, certain toll road sections and mountain routes feature emergency lanes or escape ramps designed specifically to help vehicles slow down and stop during brake failure. ‘If brakes are not working effectively, steer the vehicle towards an emergency lane if available. These lanes are specifically designed to help slow and stop the vehicle,’ Marcell told Kompas.com on Monday (26 May 2026). He explained that escape ramps are typically located on downhill sections and feature special surfaces such as gravel or inclines to gradually reduce vehicle speed. Unfortunately, many drivers remain unaware of their purpose. Some panic and continue on the main road despite brake issues. Marcell advised that when brakes begin to fail, drivers should stay calm and focus on controlling the vehicle. The first step is to pump the brake pedal to check if hydraulic pressure can be restored. Drivers are also advised to use engine braking by downshifting gradually to reduce speed without relying solely on the main brakes. ‘If using the handbrake, apply it slowly and gradually without releasing the lock button to prevent the rear wheels from locking immediately,’ he said. In modern vehicles with Electronic Parking Brake (EPB), drivers can activate emergency braking by pulling and holding the EPB button to assist in slowing the vehicle. Nevertheless, Marcell stressed that emergency lanes remain the safest option if available. Drivers should therefore be alert to escape ramp signs, especially when descending toll roads. ‘Do not wait until panic sets in to look for an emergency lane. Drivers should be aware of them from the start of the journey,’ he added.
