Understanding Thyroid Eye Disease: Symptoms of Bulging Eyes Due to Thyroid Disorders

Thyroid disease does not only impact body metabolism but also presents clear clinical manifestations in ocular health. Ophthalmologist Dr Tri Wahyu, a graduate of Padjadjaran University, revealed that patients with thyroid disorders often exhibit characteristic symptoms such as protruding or bulging eyes.

This condition is medically known as Thyroid Eye Disease (TED). According to Dr Tri, TED is an autoimmune disorder that triggers inflammation and swelling in the muscles and fatty tissues surrounding the eyeball. This occurs because antibodies, which are intended to target the thyroid gland, instead attack the muscles in the ocular area.

“Approximately 50% of patients with thyroid problems will experience ocular disturbances. Of that number, 90% have hyperthyroid conditions, although the remainder may have normal or even below-normal hormone levels,” Dr Tri stated during a health discussion in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Patients often remain unaware of their thyroid disorder until specific ocular symptoms appear. Common thyroid symptoms, such as tremors, excessive night sweating, and weight loss, are frequently dismissed as ordinary complaints. However, it is only when the eyes begin to protrude that patients typically seek medical assistance, often starting with a visit to an ophthalmologist.

In addition to impairing vision, TED significantly affects a patient’s quality of life due to drastic changes in facial aesthetics. Dr Tri emphasised that prompt and appropriate treatment is crucial to restore eyelid function and improve aesthetic aspects.

“Early detection and proper management of eyelid disorders can provide optimal results, both in terms of function and aesthetics for the patient,” he concluded.
