Understanding the TNI AU's Rafale Fighter Jets: Specifications, Sophistication, and Strategic Role
The handover of six Rafale Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MRCA) units by President Prabowo Subianto on Monday (18/5/2026) marks a new era for the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU). Produced by France’s Dassault Aviation, these are not merely ordinary fighter jets, but omnirole aircraft capable of executing various missions within a single flight.
Unlike traditional multi-role aircraft that require reconfiguration before undertaking different missions, the Rafale is designed to perform simultaneous tasks. In a single mission, the Rafable can conduct air-to-air defence, air-to-ground attacks, and reconnaissance simultaneously.
One of the Rafale’s most lethal features is its integrated electronic warfare system, known as SPECTRA. This system provides 360-degree protection against air and ground threats, allowing the aircraft to detect, identify, and disable enemy radar before they can lock onto the Rafale.
Furthermore, integration with the Meteor Missile, which was also handed over by President Prabowo, makes the Rafale a serious threat in Beyond Visual Range (BVR) combat. The Meteor missile is renowned for having the largest ‘no-escape zone’ in the world compared to other current air-to-air missiles.
These Rafale aircraft will be stationed at Air Squadron 12, under the 3.1 Combat Air Wing, based at Roesmin Nurjadin Air Base in Pekanbaru. This location is highly strategic given its proximity to the Malacca Strait and the aerial sovereignty borders in western Indonesia.
With the arrival of the Rafale, the TNI AU now possesses the capability to conduct high-precision strikes using the Hammer Smart Weapon (Highly Agile Modular Munition Extended Range), which can destroy ground targets with extraordinary accuracy in all weather conditions.
This modernisation proves the Indonesian Government’s commitment to building a respected air force, ensuring that every inch of the Nusantara’s airspace remains secure under the guardianship of the most advanced combat technology in its class.
