Understanding the Code Blue System in the Medical World
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – In an emergency, every second determines a patient’s survival. Patients therefore require a fast and coordinated medical response.
For this reason, hospitals implement Code Blue, an emergency activation system signalling that a patient is in a critical condition, such as cardiac or respiratory arrest, requiring immediate intervention. When Code Blue is activated, a specially trained medical team immediately mobilises to provide treatment according to the patient’s condition.
Dr Agung Fabian Chandranegara, Sp.JP(K), FIHA, of Mayapada Hospital South Jakarta and Tangerang, explained that in cardiac arrest, the blood flow carrying oxygen to the brain and other vital organs stops. Without immediate intervention, the patient’s chance of survival can decline significantly.
“That is why speed of response, precision of action, and coordination among the medical team are critical factors in saving patients’ lives,” he said in an official statement on Monday (7/9/2026).
Code Blue handling essentially involves a medical team comprising doctors, nurses, anaesthesia staff and other medical personnel who hold Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
In practice, the medical team may perform a range of interventions, from cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and assisted ventilation, to the use of a defibrillator to restore the heart rhythm when needed, as well as the administration of medication and follow-up treatment according to the patient’s condition.
These interventions require good team coordination and a structured handling system so that every step can be carried out quickly and accurately.
Dr Rerdin Julario, Sp.JP(K), of Mayapada Hospital Surabaya, said that in cardiac arrest cases, every stage of resuscitation must be performed according to standard, so that blood circulation and oxygen supply to vital organs can be restored as quickly as possible.
Therefore, Code Blue relies not only on response speed but on overall system readiness, from clear emergency protocols and competent medical personnel to ready-to-use resuscitation equipment, as well as regular training and simulations.
“This way, every medical team can make decisions and deliver treatment quickly, accurately, and in line with international standards,” he explained.
