Understanding the Benefits of Asymmetric Tread Patterns for SUVs

The rising trend of Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) usage in Indonesia is driving the development of tyre technologies tailored to the specific characteristics of these vehicles to ensure driving comfort. One innovation being widely implemented is the use of asymmetric tread patterns, designed to increase comfort while maintaining the ability to traverse various road conditions.

Speaking at ICE BSD, South Tangerang, Sandya Gilang, R&D Manager of PT Elangperdana Tyre Industry, stated that asymmetric designs do not compromise vehicle performance. Instead, these designs offer the advantage of reducing noise levels. “Asymmetric patterns can deliver tyre performance with a quieter effect. Since they are intended for SUVs, which typically have a harder and rougher character, noise levels can be high. Therefore, choosing an asymmetric character is much better for noise reduction,” said Sandya Gilang.

Modern SUV users require tyres that are comfortable for daily highway use, yet capable of providing performance and confidence when facing dirt, gravel, or other road conditions. To address this need, PT Elangperdana Tyre Industry has officially introduced the Accelera Omikron Rugged Terrain (R/T).

This latest tyre line is designed to provide a balance between on-road driving comfort and off-road capability. The advantages of the Accelera Omikron R/T include an aggressive All-Terrain block design, a dynamic zig-zag centre pattern, and wide, deep grooves.

He continued that, in addition to increasing comfort, the patterns present on these vehicles also provide flexibility for users in choosing the tyre’s visual character. In some models, the sidewall design is made different on each side, allowing vehicle owners to determine which side to display without affecting the tyre’s primary function.

According to the company’s claims, the Accelera Omikron Rugged Terrain, available in 20 different sizes, has passed tests of up to 30,000 kilometres under normal usage. However, tyre lifespan remains influenced by driving style, tyre pressure, vehicle load, and road conditions. The R/T variant offers a compromise between on-road driving comfort and the ability to handle more challenging surfaces, such as gravel, dirt, or light rocky paths.
