Understanding REEV Technology, the Sensation of Electric Cars that Eliminate Range Anxiety
CHONGQING, KOMPAS.com – The transition towards an era of environmentally friendly vehicles in Indonesia faces unique challenges, particularly regarding charging infrastructure and range anxiety. Amid the debate between pure electric vehicles (BEV) and conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, Range-Extended Electric Vehicle (REEV) technology presents itself as an intriguing middle path.
So, what exactly is REEV and why is this technology considered a solution for Indonesia’s automotive market?
The petrol engine here is not directly connected to the wheels; instead, it serves to charge the battery or directly supply electricity to the drive motor when the battery starts to deplete.
As a result, the vehicle still provides the driving sensation of an electric car, but with a much wider range compared to conventional battery-based electric vehicles (BEV).
This technology represents the future of energy transition.
Compared to conventional hybrid vehicles, REEV generally offers lower emissions and better fuel efficiency because the engine works only as a generator, not as the primary wheel drive.
With a combination of electric car efficiency and the range freedom akin to conventional cars, REEV becomes a highly rational option for the public looking to switch to new energy vehicles without having to change their mobility lifestyle.
The Changan Deepal S05, recently introduced by Changan Indonesia, will be the first vehicle with REEV technology in Indonesia.
“Actually, REEV is an answer to consumers’ or the public’s concerns about range, from that range anxiety. So, this might be our opportunity to provide such choices,” said Ridjal Mulyadi, Head of Marketing at Changan Indonesia, to reporters when met in Chongqing, China, on Sunday (19/4/2026).
