Underpass of Pasar Rebo Flyover in East Jakarta Transformed into Boxing Arena to Prevent Youth Brawls
The East Jakarta city government has begun revamping the area under the Pasar Rebo flyover in Susukan Ward, Ciracas District, into a public space that also serves as a venue for positive activities for teenagers. This arrangement is aimed at preventing brawling incidents that often involve young people in the region. In the future, the underpass area will be equipped with a boxing arena and skateboard facilities that can be utilised by the community. According to him, the presence of a boxing facility will also turn the underpass into a more organised and beneficial public space for the public. The revamping of the area is being carried out ahead of the official opening of the boxing and skateboard arena scheduled for 12 May. “First, the Mayor instructed us to tidy up the area around the Pasar Rebo flyover underpass, which falls within Susukan Ward, Ciracas District,” said Ritonga. In addition to building the boxing arena, the government is also providing skateboard facilities at the same location to support residents’ sports activities. Ritonga mentioned that the revamping process involves repainting several facilities and surrounding areas because the previous condition looked dull due to dust and faded paint. “The condition is indeed due to dust, and the old paint has faded, so we are repainting to make it cleaner and more attractive,” said Ritonga. “Rather than brawling, it’s better to channel their energy in a sports arena. So this area becomes a public space for the community to enjoy the facilities while channelling their hobbies and talents,” he added. To maintain the sustainability of the facility management, the regional government will also form an official administrative body tasked with regulating arena usage, training schedules, and competitions.
