Under US Pressure, Starmer Says Britain Won't Join War Against Iran
London — The British government has reaffirmed its decision not to join the Zionist Israel-US war against the Islamic Republic of Iran. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said his country wishes for an outcome where an expanding open conflict reaching into the Gulf Arab states ends through negotiation and talks.
Starmer said Israel and the US must halt their attacks so that Iran can return to the diplomatic track to negotiate its nuclear ambitions. ‘The best solution to this problem is a settlement through negotiations with Iran, in which they relinquish their nuclear ambitions,’ Starmer said at a press conference at Downing Street, London, as quoted by Anadolu Agency, on Thursday 5 March 2026.
He affirmed that the UK’s position remains focused on international efforts to ease the escalation of military action. ‘That is why I have decided that the UK will not join in the attack on Iran by the US and Israel,’ Starmer said.
He added that Britain would continue to rely on the values of international law in relation to the Iran issue. Despite the pressure from the US to join the war, Starmer said the UK would maintain its military decision to be present in the Gulf region.
