Uncovering Mercury Smuggling at Tanjung Priok Port, Customs Collaborates with Metro Jaya Police

Jakarta, VIVA – The Directorate General of Customs and Excise, through the Main Customs Service Office Type A Tanjung Priok, together with Metro Jaya Regional Police, uncovered a mercury smuggling case at Tanjung Priok Port.

This enforcement action represents the synergy among law enforcement agencies in protecting the public, safeguarding public health, and preserving the environment from the circulation of hazardous and toxic materials.

The press conference took place at the General Criminal Investigation Directorate Building of Metro Jaya Regional Police and was attended by the Head of the Main Customs Service Office Type A Tanjung Priok, Adhang Noegroho Adhi; the Head of Enforcement and Investigation Division of the Main Customs Service Office Type A Tanjung Priok, Ichlas Maradona, S.E., M.Si.; the Head of Public Relations Division of Metro Jaya Regional Police, Budhi Hermanto, S.I.K., M.Si.; the Director of Special Criminal Investigation of Metro Jaya Regional Police, Vicktor D. Mackbon, S.H., S.I.K., M.H., M.Si.; the Head of Subdirectorate IV for Certain Criminal Acts of the Special Criminal Investigation Directorate of Metro Jaya Regional Police, Anton Hermawan, M.H.; and the Head of Public Information Subdivision of the Public Relations Division of Metro Jaya Regional Police, Tiksnarto Andaru Rahutomo, S.H., S.I.K., M.Si.

The Head of the Main Customs Service Office Type A Tanjung Priok, Adhang Noegroho Adhi, stated that this uncovering is concrete evidence of Customs and Excise’s commitment to carrying out its supervisory and public protection functions. Customs and Excise fully supports the implementation of supervision over the circulation of hazardous goods.

“The public needs to understand that goods like mercury pose high risks to health and the living environment, so their transportation or export is a serious concern in our supervision,” said Adhang, quoted on Wednesday, 13 May 2026.

On that occasion, it was explained that the uncovering of the case began on 21 April 2026 at the Customs Inspection Post Tanjung Priok against one 40-foot full container load (FCL) container destined for export to Manila, Philippines. Based on the analysis and examination of export documents by Customs and Excise officers, discrepancies were found between the export notification documents and the goods loaded inside the container.
