Unchanged Since 2005, Study on Transjakarta Fare Increase Deemed Reasonable
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Special Staff to the Governor and Deputy Governor of Jakarta for Public Communications, Chico Hakim, considers the study conducted by PT TransJakarta regarding the possibility of fare adjustments to be a common matter.
He stated that the current Rp3,500 fare has been in place since 2005, or about 21 years, while operational costs continue to rise.
“The study conducted by PT TransJakarta is a common matter. The Rp3,500 fare has indeed been in place since 2005 (21 years), while operational costs continue to increase due to inflation, energy prices, fleet maintenance (including electric buses), and service expansions,” Chico explained in Jakarta on Monday.
Nevertheless, he emphasised that the study is still ongoing and has not yet led to a final decision.
Chico also said that the authority to set fares remains with the Governor of DKI Jakarta and the DKI Jakarta DPRD through the APBD mechanism.
Therefore, continued Chico, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government continues to prioritise the principle of prudence by considering the public’s purchasing power and the overall economic conditions before deciding on fare adjustments.
“There is no decision on a fare increase in 2026. The priority remains to maintain quality services with efficient subsidies,” Chico stated.
He said that the subsidy allocation for PT TransJakarta in the 2026 APBD amounts to around Rp3.7 trillion, which is expected to ensure that services remain affordable for the public.
Previously, TransJakarta’s President Director Welfizon Yuza stated that a study on fare adjustments has been conducted.
However, the final decision remains in the hands of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government together with the DKI Jakarta DPRD.
He said that this study was carried out considering that TransJakarta’s fares have not increased for 21 years. He compared the current situation to 2005, when the DKI Jakarta Provincial Minimum Wage was still around Rp800,000.
Now, continued Welfizon, that figure is around Rp6 million, while TransJakarta’s fare has not changed.
“The increase (in UMP) is already 7-8 times, but our fare has remained for 21 years,” he said.
