Uncertain Weather Prompts Alert for Fishermen and Batam Port Activities
Weather conditions in the Batam region and its surroundings at the beginning of April 2026 are observed to be uncertain. The Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), through the Hang Nadim Meteorology Station in Batam, has advised fishermen and those involved in port activities to increase their vigilance against weather changes that may occur at any time.
The BMKG forecaster at Hang Nadim explained that although the weather is generally dominated by partly cloudy to cloudy conditions, there is potential for light local rain, particularly in the afternoon to evening. This rapid weather change is deemed to have a direct impact on sea activities.
“The current weather tends to be dynamic. Mornings may appear clear, but afternoons to evenings have the potential for local rain accompanied by wind,” said the BMKG forecaster on Wednesday (1/4).
In addition, fairly strong winds in the waters around Batam are also a concern. These winds not only affect sailing comfort but also have the potential to increase wave heights, especially in open waters. In response to these conditions, officers at the ASDP Telaga Punggur Port stated that they are continuously monitoring weather developments to ensure maritime safety remains maintained.
“We continue to operate as usual, but always coordinate with BMKG. If the weather worsens, there will certainly be schedule adjustments for passenger safety,” said Amran, 45, one of the ASDP Telaga Punggur officers.
He added that so far, ferry activities are running smoothly, but they urge prospective passengers to arrive earlier and follow the latest information from port officers.
“We also remind passengers to always follow the instructions of on-site officers, especially when the weather is unfavourable,” he added.
On the other hand, BMKG also warns of the potential for tidal flooding due to maximum sea levels in the early April 2026 period. This phenomenon is triggered by the full moon phase, which causes an increase in sea levels in coastal areas. This condition has the potential to disrupt activities in port areas, such as cargo loading and unloading processes or passenger mobility.
Sea water pooling can also occur at several low-lying coastal points. The air temperature in Batam ranges from 26 to 29 degrees Celsius with fairly high humidity, making the air feel warm and humid throughout the day. In general, public activities can still proceed normally.
However, BMKG emphasises the importance of vigilance and preparedness against the potential for rapid weather changes, especially for those active at sea and in coastal areas. BMKG and port authorities urge the public to continue monitoring the latest weather information and follow official guidance to avoid risks arising from uncertain weather conditions.
