UNAND Proposes Tunnel and Underground Structures Research Centre
Padang (ANTARA) - The University of Andalas (UNAND) in West Sumatra has proposed establishing a research centre focused on tunnel and complex underground structures to support strategic infrastructure development in the province. ‘This research centre will collaborate with Hutama Karya, the Ministry of Public Works, and the West Sumatra Provincial Government,’ said UNAND Rector Efa Yonnedi in Padang on Sunday. Prior to proposing the research centre, the former World Bank consultant met with strategic stakeholders, including the Chief Operating Officer of Danantara and the Head of the State-Owned Enterprise Regulatory Agency, to promote UNAND’s involvement in the Ranah Minang development master plan. The rector stated that the establishment of the research centre stems from significant opportunities for the university in developing strategic infrastructure in West Sumatra, including toll roads and tunnels. ‘This presents a major opportunity for the Faculty of Engineering. We can establish a tunnel and complex structures research centre that not only supports development but also generates research, publications, and opportunities for internships and advanced studies based on research,’ he explained. The Ministry of Public Works, through Hutama Karya, is currently constructing the Sitinjau Lauik Viaduct, costing up to Rp2.793 trillion under a government-private partnership (KPBU) scheme. The collaboration is expected to create mutually beneficial ties between industry and academia, including opportunities for industry practitioners to pursue research-based master’s or doctoral studies at UNAND. He added that many UNAND Faculty of Engineering alumni have made notable contributions nationally, not only as mid-level professionals but also as strategic decision-makers across key sectors. ‘UNAND Faculty of Engineering alumni have become CEOs and leaders influencing the energy, finance, infrastructure, and other strategic sectors in Indonesia,’ he said.
