UN Welcomes Peace Agreement Between the US and Iran
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the peace agreement announced between the United States and Iran. He described the planned accord as a vital step towards ending the conflict that has shaken the Middle East and disrupted global economic stability in recent months.
In an official statement delivered through his spokesperson, Guterres assessed the deal as a significant development because it includes a permanent halt to military operations, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and a framework for continued negotiations towards a more comprehensive resolution. “This agreement is a crucial step towards ending the conflict. I hope both parties seize this momentum and redouble their efforts to achieve a final settlement,” Guterres said.
He also affirmed the UN’s readiness to support any process leading to sustainable and comprehensive peace. Guterres expressed appreciation to several countries that played a role in the mediation process, including Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. According to him, the involvement of these nations helped pave the way for an agreement that is now widely welcomed by the international community.
The conflict between the US and Iran erupted in late February following a joint American and Israeli attack on targets in Iranian territory. Tehran subsequently retaliated with strikes against Israel and several Gulf states allied with Washington. The escalation directly impacted the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic shipping route for global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. A ceasefire was briefly agreed upon in April, but sporadic clashes continued. In the past week alone, two exchanges of fire further heightened tensions in the region.
Prior to the peace agreement’s announcement, Guterres also condemned an Israeli air strike in Beirut. He noted that the action occurred amidst ongoing diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran to reach a peace deal. He warned that a prolonged conflict not only worsens the regional security situation but also has serious repercussions for the world economy. Consequently, Guterres called on all parties to show maximum restraint during this phase, which is considered highly decisive for the future of peace in the Middle East.
