UN warns Ukraine conflict risks spiralling out of control
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated on Thursday (28 May) that the Ukraine conflict risks spiralling out of control. ‘However, the direction of the war – the escalation and intensification we are witnessing – risks spiralling out of control,’ Guterres said during a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine. He also noted that de-escalation, a ceasefire, and further diplomacy are now needed. ‘The current priority is to create conditions for a fair, lasting, and comprehensive peace – in line with the UN Charter, international law, and UN resolutions,’ the Secretary-General said. Russia’s Foreign Ministry said on Monday that a deadly Ukrainian attack on a college in Starobilsk, Luhansk, was the latest trigger for Russian forces to launch systematic strikes against Ukraine’s defence industry companies, decision-making centres, and command posts in Kyiv. The ministry urged foreign nationals, including diplomatic staff, to leave Kyiv as soon as possible.
