UN: US-Iran Conflict a Major Setback for World Peace
Moscow (ANTARA) - United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has affirmed that the return of conflict between the United States and Iran is a devastating blow to civilians in the Middle East and threatens regional stability.
In a statement published by the OHCHR on Tuesday, Turk said the escalation also hampers peace efforts and increases the risk of human rights violations.
“The return of a wider conflict in the Middle East between the US and Iran is a major setback for civilians in and around the region. It undermines peace efforts and deepens instability, with serious risks to human rights across the region,” Turk said.
He called on all parties to the conflict to comply with international humanitarian law, including taking all necessary steps to protect civilians and civilian objects, and to reimpose and observe ceasefires in accordance with international law.
He also voiced concern over reports of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to its potential for far-reaching humanitarian consequences.
“Reports of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz are deeply alarming, as their impact on human rights extends far beyond the region. Disruption to the distribution of food, medicines and other essential commodities would have social, economic and humanitarian consequences at both regional and global levels,” Turk said.
US forces launched a fresh wave of attacks against Iran from 8 July. US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the strikes were a response to Iran’s actions against commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran retaliated by attacking a number of American military bases in several Middle Eastern countries.
On Sunday, Iran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz until the United States ceased its interference in the region, following renewed exchanges of attacks between the two countries.
Then on 13 July 2026, US President Donald Trump declared that the United States would act as the “guardian” of the Strait of Hormuz. He also announced the reimposition of a blockade on Iranian ports.
