UN Urges Two-State Solution for Palestine Not to be Forgotten
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for the two-state solution for the Palestinian issue not to be forgotten.
“We must not allow the two-state solution to vanish before our eyes,” the Secretary-General stated from the UN General Assembly podium on Tuesday.
According to Guterries, violence, population displacement, and the expansion of settlements in the occupied West Bank are destroying the path to peace while simultaneously creating the risk of ethnic cleansing.
Israeli authorities last week announced a tender for the construction of 2,167 new homes as part of the E1 settlement expansion project in the West Bank. If combined with previously approved plans, the total reaches 3,401 units.
The Palestinian side opposes the project, which could bisect the West Bank and sever access to East Jerusalem from other Palestinian territories.
Meanwhile, Russia maintains that a resolution to the crisis can only be achieved based on the “two-state” formula approved by the UN Security Council.
This solution mandates the establishment of an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
