JAKARTA - The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has been urged to boldly identify the perpetrators of the attack on United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeeping troops that resulted in the deaths of three Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) personnel.

University of Indonesia international law expert Hikmahanto Juwana stated that the investigation conducted by UNIFIL into the incident must be independent.

“And at the appropriate time, it must explicitly name who is responsible so that there is no speculation or protection for parties that should be held accountable,” Hikmahanto said via text message on Wednesday (1/4/2026).

Hikmahanto also explained that Indonesia must demand that conflicting states and parties provide strong protection for the peacekeepers.

“And if there are victims from an attack, they must not be left without accountability,” he said.

The same sentiment was expressed directly by Indonesia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Umar Hadi, during the emergency session of the UN Security Council on Tuesday (31/3/2026).

In the session, the UNSC was also urged to follow up on the investigation results by holding the perpetrators legally accountable.

“Immunity must not be a standard, and attacks on peacekeeping forces must not be repeated or tolerated,” he stated.

“We make this demand as profound respect for our fallen peacekeeping troops, to whom Indonesia extends the highest honours for their ultimate sacrifice in serving international peace and security,” Umar said.

“For this purpose, Indonesia remains committed to contributing to the maintenance of peace and security as mandated by our Constitution,” he added.

For information, UNIFIL reported that three Indonesian peacekeepers were killed within less than 24 hours in southern Lebanon.

In the incident, two TNI personnel were killed, while two others were injured, one of them in serious condition, quoted from CBC on Monday.

This incident occurred just hours after a separate incident that killed another TNI personnel.

He was reported killed when the UNIFIL base was hit by projectiles near the village of Adchit al-Qusayr, also in southern Lebanon.

UNIFIL has stated that it has launched investigations into both incidents.
