UN tribunal indicts Milosevic

NETHERLANDS: The United Nations war crimes tribunal announced fresh charges on Tuesday against ousted Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic for "ethnic cleansing" in Croatia in 1991-1992.

Until now Milosevic, who was handed over to the tribunal in June, had been accused exclusively of crimes against humanity for atrocities in Serbia's Kosovo province in 1999.

Prosecutors signed the new Croatia indictment in late September and the tribunal said in a statement that a judge had now approved it.

It released the full 21-page text accusing Serb forces of brutally expelling non-Serb populations from Croatia under a master plan approved by Milosevic, who is awaiting trial in the UN detention center near The Hague.

The indictment charged Milosevic on 32 counts, but does not include the tribunal's gravest charge of genocide. -Reuters
