UN to Submit Report on Israel's 'Sins' in Syria to Security Council
The United Nations (UN) is set to submit a detailed report on various violations committed by Israel in Syrian territory to the UN Security Council at the end of this month. The plan for decisive action was announced directly by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Guterres stressed that any violation of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity is unacceptable. He strongly urged Israel to comply with the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement.
“The atrocities witnessed in Syria have not broken the resolve of the Syrian people to pursue their legitimate aspirations. Violations of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are unacceptable,” the UN Secretary-General stated during a press conference in Damascus.
During his official visit to Syria, Guterres visited Sednaya Prison to see firsthand the traces of crimes against humanity at the site. He revealed that the visit exposed the horrifying scale of suffering endured by detainees, where tens of thousands perished and were brutally tortured.
“The visit to Sednaya Prison revealed the horrifying scale of suffering experienced there, where tens of thousands died and were tortured brutally. The UN is determined to do everything possible to support Syria’s transition moving in the right direction,” Guterres said regarding the findings at the prison.
Guterres voiced the UN’s full commitment to supporting the internationally backed political transition process in Syria. He assessed that the direction of the country’s governmental transition is currently on the right track.
Furthermore, the Secretary-General confirmed that the transitional justice process in Syria is underway. He emphasized the importance of ensuring accountability and the rule of law for all crimes committed in recent years.
Guterres also issued a serious warning about the humanitarian crisis currently affecting the Syrian population. He cautioned that the UN humanitarian aid being distributed currently only meets around 20% of the Syrian people’s total needs.
