YANGON (DPA): United Nations Special Envoy to Myanmar Razali Ismail has been invited to pay a four-day visit to the country starting June 1, government officials confirmed on Thursday.
It will be Razali's fourth visit to the problem-plagued country since June, 2000, shortly after the Malaysian diplomat was appointed special envoy to Myanmar for UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
Razali had greater success than his predecessors in breaching the political gulf between Myanmar's ruling military junta and the main opposition party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), headed by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.
Shortly after Razali's first two visits last year, the two sides initiated a quiet political dialogue in October, aimed at ending years of deadlock.
