UN Security Council Unanimously Adopts Resolution to Prosecute Attackers of Peacekeepers

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has unanimously adopted Resolution 2823 on Tuesday (23/6/2026), calling for accountability for crimes targeting UN peacekeepers. The resolution was tabled by Denmark and Pakistan with the support of more than 150 UN member states. Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, stated that nearly 4,500 UN peacekeepers have been killed in the line of duty, 183 of whom were from Pakistan. Ahmad noted that in some missions, attacks on peacekeepers have increased in both number and sophistication. He said that when peacekeeping personnel are targeted, it often ends without adequate accountability. “When peacekeepers are killed or injured in attacks while carrying out mandates authorised by this Council, the Council must remain seized of what happens next: whether the facts have been established, whether investigations are being conducted, whether perpetrators have been identified, and whether justice is served,” Ahmad said, as quoted by UN News. Without naming any party or country, Ahmad stressed that impunity for such crimes cannot be allowed to continue. “There must be accountability,” he said. Resolution 2823 requests the Secretary-General to ensure that, in the event of future attacks, peacekeeping operations promptly establish a clear factual record of the incident and make it available for investigation by the host country. The resolution also calls upon all states and other relevant actors to cooperate fully with such investigations.
