UN Security Council Emergency Session Becomes Heated, Iran Delivers Sharp Message to US: "Be Civil!"

The UN Security Council chambers, typically governed by rigid protocol and diplomatic formality, transformed into a stage for open and tense confrontation. During an emergency session addressing military escalation in the Middle East, a heated verbal exchange erupted between Iranian and American representatives, reflecting the deep enmity between the two nations.

Tensions escalated when the American representative, exercising his right of reply, launched a series of sharp accusations against the Teheran regime. The Washington envoy described Iran as a “machine of radicalism” and claimed that Iranians were actually celebrating the US-Israeli strikes on the streets, hoping for freedom from tyranny.

US Deputy Permanent Representative for Special Political Affairs at the UN, Robert Wood, openly characterised the Iranian government not as a legitimate political entity, but as a dangerous criminal one. Speaking in a confrontational tone, Wood made grave accusations that Teheran was behind various tragedies befalling American citizens abroad.

“The regime in Teheran has led attacks that have cost American lives. This is a regime that has killed tens of thousands of its own people and imprisoned even more simply because they desire freedom from your tyranny,” Wood stated firmly.

Without restraint, Wood also delivered a sharp insult that struck at the heart of Iran’s diplomatic standing on the world stage. Openly, he described the presence of Iran’s delegation in the UN Security Council seat as an embarrassing anomaly for the international institution.

“The presence of this regime here, in this Council, is a mockery of this body,” Wood said with a sarcastic tone.

This statement immediately created an uncomfortable atmosphere in the council chambers, as it was perceived as demeaning the dignity of a UN member state in the highest forum that should uphold protocols of sovereign equality.

Hearing statements deemed to undermine his nation’s sovereignty, Iranian Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, was not silent. When the session chair granted him the final opportunity, Iravani chose not to offer a lengthy defence, but instead delivered a direct and pointed rebuke.

“I have only one message. I advise the representative of the United States to be civil. That would be far better for you and the nation you represent,” Iravani said firmly.

Unwilling to accept the rebuke, the American representative returned to the microphone. He reaffirmed that he would not heed Iravani’s advice, whilst reiterating that Teheran had killed tens of thousands of its own people.

“I will not discredit this session by offering a further response to the representative of a regime that imprisons its own people simply because they desire freedom,” the US envoy replied with a raised tone.

Iravani strongly refuted Wood’s claim that Iranians were pleased their country was being bombed. He described the narrative as an insult to the ground reality.

“It is quite ridiculous to hear the US representative claim that Iranians are celebrating this attack. Our people are mourning the deaths of civilians, including schoolchildren killed by your bombs,” Iravani said.

This tension represented the climax of the session, which lasted more than two hours. Amid reported ongoing bombing in Iranian territory, this verbal confrontation at UN headquarters demonstrated that diplomatic communication channels between the two nations had reached their lowest point.
