UN Security Council Convenes Emergency Meeting to Discuss Attack on Iran
The UN Security Council (UNSC) is scheduled to convene an emergency meeting today, Saturday, 28 February local time, to discuss combined attacks by Israel and the United States against Iran, as well as the intensifying military escalation in the Middle East.
In response to the situation, UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a forceful statement calling for the immediate cessation of all forms of hostility. He warned that failure to contain the situation risks triggering a broader regional conflict.
“A wider regional conflict will bring serious consequences for civilians and regional stability,” Guterres warned in his official statement.
Guterres also emphasised that all member states must comply with their obligations under international law, including the UN Charter.
In accordance with the UN Charter, every state is prohibited from making “threats or using force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.”
The Security Council meeting is expected to produce concrete measures to prevent a more destructive open conflict in the region.
