UN Security Council Condemns Attack on Barakah Nuclear Plant
Hamilton, Canada (ANTARA) - The UN Security Council has condemned a drone attack on a power plant outside the perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) earlier this month. The UNSC also warned of serious risks to civilians and the local environment from the attack. ‘Security Council members strongly condemned the heinous drone attack on a power plant outside the perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Al Dhafra region of the UAE,’ said the UNSC in a press statement on Tuesday (26 May). The UNSC stated that the attack constitutes a clear violation of international law, posing serious risks to civilian lives, infrastructure, and the environment. The UNSC demanded an immediate and permanent cessation of all attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure in the UAE, including peaceful nuclear facilities. ‘Security Council members called on countries to adhere to the highest standards of nuclear safety, security, and safeguards, and to refrain from any actions that could endanger nuclear safety and security,’ the statement added. The UNSC reiterated that the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant was designed, built, and operated in accordance with the highest international standards under the UAE Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation and IAEA oversight. The Council also reaffirmed its strong support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the UAE.
