The UN Security Council, on Wednesday (1 April), condemned the incident that killed three Indonesian peacekeeping personnel from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on Sunday (29 March) and Monday (30 April). In its press statement, Security Council members reaffirmed their full support for UNIFIL and urged all parties to ensure the safety and security of its personnel and facilities, including the mission’s freedom of movement, in accordance with international law. They also called on all parties to refrain from actions that could endanger peacekeepers. While emphasising that peacekeepers must not be targeted, they requested the UN to investigate the incident through UNIFIL and to keep troop-contributing countries informed of developments in the investigation, in line with the objectives of Security Council resolutions 2518 (2020) and 2589 (2021). They further urged the parties to fully implement Security Council resolution 1701 (2006) and reaffirmed their strong commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and unity. In addition to the three fatalities, five other peacekeepers were injured in the incident. In recent weeks, several other incidents have affected UNIFIL positions and injured peacekeepers amid ongoing hostilities along the Blue Line.
