UN Security Council Adopts Resolution Calling on Iran to Halt Attacks on Gulf States
New York — The UN Security Council adopted a resolution on Wednesday (11 March) drafted by Bahrain calling for Iran to end its attacks against Gulf states, according to RIA Novosti reports.
Thirteen nations voted in support of the document, whilst Russia and China abstained. Notably, the resolution makes no mention of military operations conducted by the United States and Israel against the Islamic Republic.
The resolution condemns Iran’s attacks on Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan, and demands that such attacks cease immediately. However, it does not reference aggression by the US and Israel, nor does it call upon these two nations to end their military operations against Iran.
Later on Wednesday, the Security Council was scheduled to vote on a Russian-drafted resolution calling for a ceasefire in the Middle East. Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN, Anna Evstigneeva, stated that the Russian resolution on the Middle East conflict was non-confrontational in nature, unlike the Bahraini draft document.
Iran launched attacks on Israeli territory and US military targets in the Middle East in retaliation for a joint US-Israeli military operation launched on 28 February. The first day of the US-Israeli military campaign resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the bombing of a girls’ school in southern Iran. Iran estimates that casualties from these attacks have exceeded 1,300 persons to date.
