UN Secretary-General Welcomes Extension of Lebanon-Israel Ceasefire

UNITED NATIONS (ANTARA) - United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday (16/5) welcomed the announcement of a 45-day extension to the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel, his office said.

Guterres reaffirmed the UN’s support for all efforts to end hostilities and alleviate the suffering of communities on both sides of the Blue Line, the demarcation line between Lebanon and Israel established by the world body in 2000, his office said in a note to correspondents.

“The Secretary-General urges all parties to fully respect the cessation of hostilities, cease further attacks, and adhere to their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law, at all times,” it said.

The UN remains committed to supporting all diplomatic efforts to promote the full implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701, which was intended to resolve the 2006 Lebanon War between Hezbollah and Israel, it added.
