UN Secretary-General Candidates to Participate in Debate on 23 July

All candidates for the position of the next United Nations Secretary-General have been invited to participate in a debate at the UN General Assembly Hall on 23 July, a spokesperson for the UNGA president, La Neice Collins, announced on Thursday. In a statement to the media, Collins said UNGA President Annalena Baerbock has sent a letter to UN member states informing them that all candidates have been invited to the debate. Additional information regarding the debate, including registration details, will be provided in due course, Collins said. There are currently six candidates competing to become the next UN Secretary-General, including four women from Latin America and the Caribbean. The term of the current UN Secretary-General will conclude at the end of 2026. The next Secretary-General will assume office on 1 January 2027.
