UN Reveals Critical Tipping Point in Palestine, Future at Stake
The Israeli-occupied West Bank has reached a “critical tipping point” due to escalating violence and systematic pressure on Palestinian society, a situation that increasingly threatens the future of Palestinian governance.
Hannan Sulieman, Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF, told the UN Security Council that the situation requires political action, not merely humanitarian assistance. She stated that the conditions enabling Palestinian children to live in safety can only be created through political decisions.
“Humanitarian organisations cannot create the political conditions that children need to be safe,” Sulieman said, as reported by Anadolu Agency on Wednesday (12/8/2026).
Sulieman reported that at least 174 Palestinian children have been verified killed in the West Bank since January 2024. She also noted that 355 Palestinian children are currently in military detention, nearly half of them held without charge or trial.
“That means more than one child (has died) every week,” she said.
She urged the international community to prioritise the protection of children, including ending administrative detention and forced displacement. Sulieman also called for safe access to schools and hospitals, as well as the delivery of humanitarian aid without delay.
UN Deputy Special Coordinator Ramiz Alakbarov also warned that the situation in the West Bank requires immediate action to prevent a de facto annexation. In 2024, dozens of Palestinians were reported killed and around 3,800 people lost their homes due to demolitions, evictions, and attacks.
“Settler violence has reached unprecedented levels,” Alakbarov stressed. He noted that more than1,400 incidents of violence have been documented this year, affecting 260 Palestinian communities.
Alakbarov also highlighted the financial crisis facing the Palestinian Authority, which is experiencing a shortfall of approximately US$6 billion due to Israel withholding tax and customs revenues. He described the various pressures as “interconnected measures, not standalone events” aimed at weakening Palestinian governance.
Since the war in Gaza began in October 2023, the escalation in the West Bank has steadily intensified. Palestinian data indicates that more than 1,183 Palestinians have been killed, 13,000 wounded, and nearly 25,000 arrested, while Palestinians warn that these conditions could pave the way for the annexation of the West Bank and derail the establishment of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders.
