UN Opposes US-Israel Attacks on Iran's Largest Gas Field
The United Nations (ANTARA) - The UN opposes attacks on the South Pars gas field and other energy infrastructure in Iran, said UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq during a press conference on Wednesday (18/3). Earlier on the same day, the Tasnim news agency reported that Israel and the United States attacked energy facilities in Iran’s largest gas field and the Asaluyeh industrial zone, which serves as the central gas processing hub. Fires were reported in Asaluyeh after storage tanks and processing facilities were hit by the strikes. “Yes, we oppose all such attacks,” Haq said when asked if the UN condemns the strikes. He emphasised the need for conflicting parties to avoid attacks on non-military targets. On 28 February, the US and Israel launched attacks on several targets in Iran, including in Tehran, causing damage and killing civilians. Iran retaliated by striking Israeli territory and US military facilities across the Middle East. The US and Israel initially claimed the “preliminary strikes” were necessary to counter threats from Iran’s nuclear programme, but later stated their aim was to change the ruling regime in Iran. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed on the first day of the US-Israel military operation. Russian President Vladimir Putin described Khamenei’s assassination as a “cynical violation of international law.” Russia’s Foreign Ministry condemned the US-Israel operation and called for de-escalation and an end to hostilities.
