UN official visits slums
JAKARTA: The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Resident Representative C. Jan Kamp visited two slum projects in Tambora, West Jakarta, and Cipinang, East Jakarta, to monitor the activities of the UN Volunteers deployed to help improve the environment and living conditions of urban slum communities through enhancing community participation.
Accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Manpower, Kamp visited the apartment complex in the Tambora subdistrict. He was greeted by a group of preschool students and residents.
The preschool, set up in August last year, is one of the programs which the UN Volunteers have successfully established.
The volunteers have also helped mobilized the community in self-help development activities, such as sewing and cooking, setting up a library, basic English courses and income generating activities for women groups. (sim)
