Geneva (ANTARA) - The world is currently experiencing the most violent period since World War II, as the escalation in the Middle East continues to have a devastating impact on civilians and livelihoods, with global ripple effects, according to a United Nations (UN) official.

“Our world is currently in the most violent condition since World War II. The number of displaced people forced to leave their homes is increasing every hour,” stated Jorge Moreira da Silva, Executive Director of the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), in a statement on Monday (23/3).

The highly destructive conflict in the Middle East has had cross-border impacts and is shaking the global economy amid surges in oil, fuel, and gas prices, da Silva said.

He pointed out that developing countries in Asia and Africa are likely to suffer the most severe consequences, and the global number of people living in hunger is estimated to increase by tens of millions this year.

He urged all parties to implement all UN Security Council resolutions and to end the chaos and suffering of communities through diplomatic and peaceful solutions.

UNOPS, previously part of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), was established as a separate, financially self-reliant entity within the UN system on 1 January 1995. Headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark, the agency provides project management, procurement, and infrastructure services in more than 100 countries worldwide.
