UN invited to curb border crossing
ATAMBUA, East Nusa Tenggara: Police in the province of East
Nusa Tenggara have invited the UN Civilian Police (Civpol) in
East Timor to cooperate in curbing illegal border crossings,
which have lately been on the rise following unrest in the newly
independent state.
"I communicated the call for cooperation to the Civpol
representative, who visited the Belu district Police Headquarters
last Monday," district police chief, Adj. High Comr. Agus Nugroho
told Antara here on Wednesday.
He added that the call for cooperation would also be submitted
to the meeting of the Tactical Coordination Working Group (TCWG)
in Maliana, Bobonaro, East Timor, slated to be held later in the
day.
The TCWG meeting is a routine one for coordination between the
task force of the Indonesian Military (TNI) for the security of
the East Nusa Tenggara-East Timor border and the UN peacekeeping
force, which involves the Indonesian Police, UN Civpol, and other
related agencies.
"The meeting is an opportunity to discuss steps in
anticipation of the second exodus of the East Timorese due to an
internal conflict," Agus said. --Antara
