UN Faces Cash Crunch, Warns Funds Could Run Out by August

The United Nations (UN) will run out of cash in August and is currently awaiting contributions to continue operating after September, stated the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Programme Planning, Finance, and Budget, Chandramouli Ramanathan, on Wednesday.

“In the regular budget, we also have almost no cash. We will have no cash after August, September. The money is gone. We are waiting for fund collection to survive after September,” Ramanathan said during a press conference.

“So, whatever happens, it is highly likely we will end this year with zero cash, which means we will be almost unable to survive with a reduced budget,” he added.

Ramanathan stated that the UN will face a crisis in September unless the US and China pay their contributions, but even if they do, funds will run out by the end of 2026.

“If either of them does not pay on time, we will face a bit of a crisis in September. But if they do not pay at all or pay less than the original amount, then we will face some challenges at the end of the year,” said Ramanathan.

“However, even if both pay, we will end the year with almost all of our cash exhausted,” he added.
