UN envoy to go to Myanmar

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said here
yesterday he would send a special envoy to Myanmar in January to
meet officials of its ruling junta as well as opposition leader
Aung San Suu Kyi.

Annan disclosed the plan to journalists after meeting Myanmar
leader Senior Gen. Than Shwe on the sidelines of an East Asian
summit here.

"We agreed that I will send my envoy Alvaro de Soto to Myanmar
in January to discuss with Mrs. Aung San Suu Kyi and the
president," he said.

"My envoy will meet the entire leadership and also see Mrs.
Aung San Suu Kyi next month," added Annan, who was on a bilateral
visit to Malaysia but used the occasion to meet some summit
participants.
