UN Emergency Council Meeting Discusses US-Israel War Against Iran, Here Are the Results
The United Nations Security Council convened for an emergency session lasting two hours, concluding at approximately 23:00 GMT on Saturday, 28 January 2026 (05:00 WIB on Sunday, 1 March 2026).
All 15 UN Security Council member states participated in the meeting, alongside the UN Secretary-General and the ambassadors of Iran and Israel, who provided briefings on the alarming situation in the Middle East.
The United States and Israel launched a series of attacks against Iran, which prompted a swift retaliatory response from Tehran targeting Israel and seven countries hosting US military bases.
Several key points emerged from the Security Council meeting. Firstly, Secretary-General Guterres characterised the US and Israeli attacks against Iran as “flagrant aggression”. He stated that these attacks constituted an illegal violation of the UN Charter, whilst simultaneously condemning Iran’s retaliatory actions, according to Al Jazeera.
Guterres warned that the current situation represents an escalation that could spiral beyond control.
Iran’s ambassador emphasised that these attacks are occurring amid ongoing nuclear negotiations, whilst US and Israeli representatives argued that talks have reached an impasse with no further justification for continuation.
There is a stark disagreement amongst the parties regarding whether these negotiations should proceed and what the consequences will be as the situation moves beyond its previously established parameters.
