A senior diplomat associated with the United Nations (UN) has resigned from his position after claiming that the global body is preparing to confront a scenario involving the possible use of nuclear weapons in Iran, as war continues to rage. According to NDTV, on Tuesday (31/3/2026), Mohamad Safa, who served as the main representative of Patriotic Vision (PVA) at the UN, announced his resignation via a post on social media platform X, accompanied by a letter explaining his reasons. PVA is an international organisation with special consultative status at the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). In his resignation announcement on X, Safa stated that he made the decision to step down after much consideration. He claimed that several senior UN officials are serving strong lobbies rather than the UN itself. “After much consideration, and after it became clear to me that some senior UN officials are serving strong lobbies and not serving the UN, I have decided to suspend all my duties as the Main Representative of PVA at the UN and from all UN committees/groups of which I am a member,” Safa wrote in his statement. “I cannot, in good conscience, be part of or witness what is happening at a time when the UN is preparing for the possibility of the use of nuclear weapons,” he said. In a separate post that has been viewed more than 9 million times on X, Safa shared a photo of Tehran, Iran’s capital, while revealing the possibility of nuclear weapon use in Iran during the ongoing war. He stated that the UN is preparing scenarios to address such a situation. “I think people do not understand how serious this situation is because the UN is preparing for the possibility of the use of nuclear weapons in Iran,” Safa said in his post. “This is a photo of Tehran. For those who are uneducated, who have never travelled, who have never served, the war supporters licking their lips imagining bombing it. This is not a low-population desert. There are families, children, family pets. Ordinary working-class people with dreams. You are mentally ill for wanting war,” he wrote. Safa added that Tehran is a city with nearly 10 million inhabitants. He asked his followers to imagine if Washington, Berlin, Paris, London, or other places were bombed with nuclear weapons. “I am leaving my diplomatic career to leak this information. I am suspending my duties so as not to be part of or witness this crime against humanity, in an effort to prevent a nuclear winter before it is too late,” he said. “The possibility of the use of nuclear weapons must be taken very seriously. It is dangerous. Act now. Spread this message around the world. Take to the streets. Protest for humanity and our future. Only the people can stop it. History will remember us,” he urged. Furthermore, Safa revealed that he had wanted to resign since 2023 but tried to be patient over the past three years. He referred to a series of conflicts in various countries and stated that some UN officials do not want to accuse the US and Israel of violating international law. He recounted that he faced criticism and even received death threats after expressing his concerns and offering a different perspective following the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, which triggered the war in the Gaza Strip.
