UN Convenes Emergency Meeting Following US and Israeli Attacks on Iran
The United Nations has convened an emergency meeting following military strikes launched by the United States and Israel against Iran. According to UN data, 20 Iranian cities have been affected by Israeli and American attacks.
“Military action carries the risk of triggering a chain of events that no one can control in the world’s most turbulent region,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres, according to Al Jazeera on Sunday, 1 March 2026.
He noted reports of deaths amongst Iranian leaders but stated he could not independently confirm them.
“I am calling for immediate de-escalation and cessation of hostilities. The alternative is the potential for a wider conflict with serious consequences for civilians and regional stability. I urge all parties in the strongest possible terms to return immediately to the negotiating table,” he said.
The US and Israel attacked Iran on Saturday, 28 February, in the early morning Iran time. Iran responded to the assault by striking several American military bases in the Middle East.
One of Iran’s latest attacks occurred in Doha, Qatar, on Saturday evening, 28 February, Doha time. Iranian missile strikes reportedly succeeded in damaging the radar system at the Al Udeid military base near Doha.
“Qatar was targeted by 44 missiles and eight drones… with eight people injured including one in critical condition,” a diplomat told AFP.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in the Tehran strike. Iran denied the claim and stated that Khamenei remains alive.
