UN Condemns US and Israeli Attacks on Iran, Demands Immediate Negotiations
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The UN Head of Human Rights Volker Turk has condemned attacks by the United States on Iran. The UN has also urged all parties to return to negotiations, stating that attacks will only result in death, destruction, and human suffering.
“I condemn the military attacks across Iran this morning by Israel and the United States, and the subsequent retaliatory attacks by Iran. As always, in every armed conflict, it is civilians who ultimately pay the highest price,” Turk said in a statement, quoted from AFP, Saturday (28 April 2026).
“To prevent these dire consequences for civilians, I call for restraint and urge all parties to see reason, to reduce tensions, and to return to the negotiating table where they were actively seeking solutions only hours before,” he added.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced the launch of a “massive” military attack against the Islamic Republic of Iran. In his official statement, Trump issued a harsh ultimatum to Tehran’s military forces to immediately lay down their weapons.
Citing CBC News reports, Trump specifically warned the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)—the elite forces under the direct command of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei—as well as the entire ranks of Iran’s armed forces and police.
“Put down your weapons and receive full immunity, or otherwise, face certain death,” Trump said firmly in his address on Saturday (28 February 2026).
Latest reports from the ground confirm that Trump’s order has been implemented in the form of coordinated air and missile strikes. The United States, working with Israeli forces, has reportedly launched a series of air attacks targeting various military facilities and strategic infrastructure throughout Iranian territory.
Large explosions were reported heard in the capital Tehran, as well as in several other major cities including Isfahan and Shiraz. In Tehran, eyewitnesses reported thick black smoke billowing above military installations, whilst Iran’s air defence systems continued efforts to intercept incoming projectiles in their airspace. According to reports from Al Jazeera and The Guardian, Iran has also carried out attacks against US military bases in Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman.
