The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) condemned the ‘vile and cowardly’ terrorist suicide bombing on a passenger train in Pakistan. In a statement on Tuesday (26 May), the Council said the suicide bombing on Sunday (24 May) in Balochistan province killed at least 14 Pakistani nationals and injured dozens more, including women and children. ‘Council members reiterated that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations is one of the most serious threats to international peace and security,’ the statement said. The UNSC expressed its deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of the victims, as well as the Pakistani government and people, and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured. The Council stressed the need to hold accountable the perpetrators, executors, financiers, and sponsors of the terrorist attack. The Balochistan Liberation Army claimed responsibility for the attack through its Majeed Brigade. UNSC member states were also urged to actively cooperate with Pakistan in accordance with international law and relevant Security Council resolutions. ‘Council members reiterated that every act of terrorism is criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of its motivations, wherever, whenever, and by whomsoever it is committed,’ the UNSC statement said. The Council also reaffirmed the obligation of all countries to combat terrorism through measures consistent with the UN Charter and international law, including international human rights law, refugee law, and humanitarian law.
