Hamilton (ANTARA) - The United Nations (UN) has strongly condemned missile and drone attacks targeting the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and ships in the Strait of Hormuz, amid ongoing tensions between Iran and the US.

“We are deeply concerned that several missiles and drones were launched at the UAE on 4 May, which reportedly resulted in three people injured and caused fires at an oil industrial facility in Fujairah,” said UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric during a press conference on Tuesday (5/5).

He also stated that a number of attacks targeting ships inside and around the Strait of Hormuz in recent days “significantly increase the risk of renewed hostilities in the region.”

“Amid the increasingly tense ceasefire, we call on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid any actions that could heighten tensions and undermine ongoing diplomatic and mediation efforts,” said Dujarric.

“There is no viable alternative to a peaceful resolution of international disputes fully in accordance with international law, including the UN Charter,” he added.

The Fujairah Media Office reported on Monday (4/5) that a large fire broke out at the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone, a major energy hub on the UAE’s east coast, after it was targeted by drones launched from Iran.

Authorities in Fujairah said the three injured Indian nationals have been taken to hospital for treatment.

Tensions in the Middle East have escalated following US and Israeli attacks on Iran on 28 February.

Those attacks triggered retaliation from Iran against Israel, as well as US allies in the Gulf, along with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
