UN Chief Calls AI Rollout an Unplanned Public Experiment
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday said the widespread introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) is an experiment on modern society being conducted without a plan and without public consent. “An experiment is being run on our own societies – without a plan, and without consent. That is not sustainable. And it is not acceptable,” the Secretary-General said during a press conference discussing AI. He said the technology has already changed the world. He also questioned whether humanity would make this transformation, or simply allow AI to do it. Guterres called for a number of restrictions to be placed on AI work in order to regain control over its development. These restrictions must be accepted by both governments and the companies developing the technology, he said.
