The United Nations (UN) has urged all parties in the Ukraine conflict to refrain from attacking critical infrastructure, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq told RIA Novosti on Saturday (30 May). The UN called for all sides to avoid strikes on critical infrastructure, commenting on a recent drone incident at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). Earlier that day, Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev stated that Ukrainian drones struck the turbine hall of Unit 6 at the ZNPP, triggering an explosion. No casualties or critical damage to main equipment were reported in the incident. Plant officials noted the turbine hall is approximately 10-15 feet away from the reactor hall. On Thursday (28 May), UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the Ukraine conflict risks spiralling out of control. “The direction of the war – the escalation and intensification we are witnessing – risks spiralling out of control,” Guterres said during a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine. He also stressed the need for de-escalation, a ceasefire, and further diplomacy. “What is needed now is to create conditions for a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace – in line with the UN Charter, international law, and UN resolutions,” the Secretary-General said.
