UN calls for release of detainees and resumption of dialogue in Myanmar

Washington (ANTARA) - United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for the immediate and unconditional release of all individuals arbitrarily detained in Myanmar. “The Secretary-General has noted the transfer of State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to a designated residence,” said his deputy spokesperson, Farhan Haq, on Friday (1/5). “The Secretary-General calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all parties arbitrarily detained as a fundamental step towards conditions conducive to a credible political process,” Haq added in a statement. Haq said Guterres reiterated that a viable political solution must be based on an immediate cessation of violence as well as a genuine commitment to inclusive dialogue. Guterres also emphasised the role of regional and international partners, particularly the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), in supporting efforts towards a peaceful resolution, he added. Myanmar continues to be plagued by political unrest since the 2021 Myanmar military coup, when the military seized power and detained civilian leaders. The action triggered widespread protests as well as protracted conflict across the country.
