UN Calls for Negotiations to Resolve Gulf and Red Sea Conflicts

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday (12/8) called for dialogue and negotiation to find a comprehensive and sustainable resolution to the conflicts in the Gulf and Red Sea regions.

Guterres continues to closely monitor developments related to the conflict in the Middle East, including the situation in and around the Strait of Hormuz and in the Red Sea, said Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for Guterres.

“The Secretary-General remains convinced that a comprehensive and sustainable resolution can only be achieved through dialogue and negotiation,” Haq continued.

“Such a resolution would help restore stability and confidence across the entire region, while protecting the rights and freedoms of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding areas as well as in the Red Sea.”

UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg also continues to make various efforts to de-escalate tensions in Yemen, Haq said.

Any activity that disrupts shipping traffic around the coast of Yemen will also hamper UN efforts to deliver supplies to the war-torn country, which is one of the reasons why all such obstructions in the Red Sea and around the Bab al-Mandab Strait must be halted, Haq said.
